CYQCI Participates in SEEWQCI Kick-off Meeting in Athens

The SEEWQCI Kick-off Meeting took place on 26–27 February 2026 in Athens, Greece, marking the official launch of a major European initiative aimed at strengthening secure quantum communications across Europe.

The meeting brought together partners from Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, and the Netherlands to begin work on SEEWQCI (South-East Europe to Western Europe Quantum Communication Infrastructure). The project aims to establish a scalable cross-border infrastructure for secure quantum communications, contributing to the development of a resilient and interoperable European quantum communication network.

SEEWQCI represents the next implementation phase of the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) initiative. It builds upon national projects including CYQCI (Cyprus), HellasQCI (Greece), BGQCI (Bulgaria), and NL-QCI (Netherlands), moving from national deployments toward coordinated cross-border implementation.

The future infrastructure will combine terrestrial fibre networks with satellite-based quantum connectivity, supported by the European EAGLE-1 mission. This hybrid approach will enhance interoperability between national infrastructures and contribute to strengthening Europe’s cybersecurity resilience and digital sovereignty.

Members of the CYQCI team participated in the kick-off meeting, contributing to discussions on the project’s technical roadmap, governance framework, and next steps for implementation. The meeting also featured presentations from project partners, including CYQCI Project Coordinator Kyriacos Kalli, who highlighted Cyprus’ role in the development of the EuroQCI infrastructure.
