In a groundbreaking achievement for both Cyprus and the global cybersecurity landscape, scientists from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) have successfully deployed the first-ever Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link in Cyprus. This state-of-the-art system connects critical governmental end users over CYTA’s existing fibre-optic network as part of the CYQCI (Cyprus Quantum Communication Infrastructure) project. The project, co-funded by the European Commission and the Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation of Cyprus, aims at establishing a national QKD network protecting critical infrastructure and advancing local technical know-how in the field of Quantum Technologies. The work is supported by the rest of the participating partners: the Department of Electrical Communications, the Digital Security Authority, and the Cyprus Academic Networks, ensuring the adoption of the technology will be sustainable and on track to become part of national policies.
This achievement could not be more timely, as cyberattacks on sensitive information networks intensify, posing significant risks to national security and economic stability. The QKD link, harnessing the power of quantum physics, provides an unbreakable encryption system ensuring that any attempt to intercept communication is immediately detectable. This makes QKD an essential tool in safeguarding governmental communications against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
Innovation Built on Collaboration
The QKD link is a testament to Cyprus’s growing role in technological innovation, demonstrating how academia and industry can come together to deliver cutting-edge solutions. By leveraging CYTA’s existing fiber network, the project exploits available infrastructure to deliver quantum-secure communication in a cost-effective and scalable manner.
“This achievement places Cyprus at the forefront of quantum communication in the region,” said Professor Kyriacos Kalli, CYQCI Coordinator from the Cyprus University of Technology. “It highlights our commitment to building a secure and resilient digital infrastructure for the nation while contributing to the European Union’s vision for a robust quantum communication network under the EuroQCI initiative.”
Strengthening National Security and Future-Proofing Communication
The CYQCI project aligns with national priorities to enhance cybersecurity capabilities and address the increasing challenges of protecting sensitive governmental information, especially due to the rising tensions in the region. The deployment of QKD marks the first step toward establishing a quantum communication backbone in Cyprus, paving the way for a quantum-secure future.
A Vision for the Future
The successful implementation of the QKD link is not just a technological milestone; it also positions Cyprus as a key player in the global transition to quantum communication networks and ensure its participation in the EU quantum network that is currently under development. With this foundation in place, the CYQCI project will explore further expansion of the quantum network to support critical sectors and drive innovation in quantum technologies.
